Hailing from Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russian southpaw Islam Makhachev trains at the American Kickboxing Academy. He initially studied Taekwondo and Sanda before transitioning to mixed martial arts, honing his grappling under Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Now competing as a welterweight, Makhachev is a former two-division champion, having held the UFC lightweight and welterweight belts.
Makhachev carries a 10-1-0 record into UFC Fight Night: Fiziev vs. Torres. His recent run includes a decision and a knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski in 2023.
