Throughout a lengthy career exceeding fifteen years, the orthodox athlete captured the UFC bantamweight championship and successfully defended that belt multiple times. Notably, he achieved the milestone of becoming the initial competitor to claim a UFC title via disqualification. He now operates within the featherweight division, maintaining a position as a top-five contender.

Entering the matchup at UFC 332, Sterling holds a career mark of 26-5-0. His performance in recent outings has been varied. Earlier that same year, he earned a decision win over Calvin Kattar, which followed a technical knockout defeat at the hands of Sean O'Malley during the summer of 2023.
